The United States Army's 2008 Rubber City Step Show at the John S. Knight Center Akron, OH – May 30, 2008
– On September 6, The U.S. Army, Collegestepshows.com, Hotcards.com, Magiccitycustoms.com, and Lo-Key
Entertainment are bringing back the biggest step show in Northeast Ohio. The Rubber City Step Show & Dance
Competition offers Black Greek organizations and local dance teams the opportunity to showcase their skills in front
of an audience of more than 2,000 people and compete for more than $4000 in cash and prizes. Only the best of the
best will walk away with bragging rights for the entire year. This years show will be hosted by Comedian BOOGIE
fromDetroit, Michigan and Trokinana from WENZ 107.9 (Cleveland’s Blazing Hip-Hop and R&B.)
When asked why The U.S. Army became a part of this year's event, Captain Jay Coats, U.S. Army Recruiting Company
Commander said, “The U.S. Army and Army Reserves are in support of events such as the Rubber City Stepshow that
give young men and women the opportunity to showcase their talents and abilities. Furthermore, it is of upmost
importance for the U.S. Army To be involved with its local community when it comes to giving back to the youth.”
“We’re only bringing the best teams the Midwest has to offer,” said Da’Ron Henderson, Regional Director of Hotcards.
com. “Like last year, the competition is going to be tough, but it promises to be great entertainment!” Competitors will
be judged on five criteria: energy, originality, execution, complexity and stage presence. The first place winners of the
step competition will walk away with $1,500, while $500 will go to the second place team. The dance teams will round
out the competition in a winner-takes-all scenario with $250 in prize money on the line.
Local high school dance and step teams will also be featured. “We’re excited about the opportunity to promote the
benefits of a college education to high school students in attendance,” said Chris Miller, co-owner of
Magiccitycustoms.com. “The format of the event has been deliberately designed to exhibit the values of scholarship,
unity, and pride that are traditions of Black Greek culture on college campuses.”
“While the high school teams aren’t actually competing, we still wanted to have them involved because the show is
happening in their city,” Henderson said. With that participation comes some compensation as Collegestepshow.
com, Magiccitycustoms.com, Hotcards.com, and Lo-Key Entertainment have agreed to give a donation to the high
school teams for their participation in the step exhibition. For those in attendance, there will also be a series of
drawings to award book scholarships and school supplies.
